ABOUT Good Food Organizations
A project of Community Food Centres Canada, the Good Food Organizations initiative aims to increase the capacity of community food security organizations to offer healthy and dignified food programs in their communities. The program offers resources, customized training, grants, and chances to network and promote shared priorities. By working together through a set of shared principles, the Good Food Organizations initiative connects like-minded organizations around the country in a collective commitment to achieving a healthy and fair food system.
How Good Food Organizations came to be
Over the past few years, and through our work building Community Food Centres, we have spoken to many organizations working in the community food sector who share our commitment to a fair and healthy food system. To this point our work has focused on working with partner organizations to build new Community Food Centres, and at the other end of the spectrum, to provide online resources and webinars to share resources and ideas via our online Pod Knowledge Exchange. The Good Food Organizations is an effort to go deeper into knowledge exchange and dissemination by working more closely with community food security organizations to provide more resources and supports that are tailored to local needs and contexts and to strategically work towards a set of common goals.
In 2014, we surveyed organizations working across Canada to help us understand their needs and how a new category of affiliation could support their work. From the survey results, it was clear that many organizations in the community food security sector are in need of flexible funding, sector-specific training, programmatic/evaluation resources and opportunities to connect with others working in the field. We have shaped the Good Food Organizations program in response to these priorities and are committed to ensuring it remains responsive as we connect with other organizations and learn more about how they want to work together and with us. Though we know we can’t solve every problem or answer every question that’s out there, we think that together we can maximize our resources and impact and make the case for the value of the work we are doing.
